The Duke of Doo-Wop
Speaking of Eliza, I saw her yesterday at Amy's "Open Discussion" Zoom call that I attend regularly, if not religiously, every Friday from 12:30 pm. to 2 pm Eastern time, and she paid me a great compliment.
This certainly takes the edge off whatever concern I might have had, or any apprehension I may have been experiencing regarding my picking Eliza up at the Denver International Airport next Thursday May 16 and then having lunch with her and waiting at the airport for two other people who are arriving on a later flight, so that I could drive them to the Colorado Chautauqua in Boulder where we are having the first-ever in-person gathering for the Perfectly OK community of spiritual seekers and Finders that I have been a part of now for roughtly 20 years.
I'll go into the whole "seekers and Finders" thing perhaps at some point down the road, or maybe the March Mazurka will come to an end before I get to it and I'll have to hold off on that one until July's Jamboree or whatever Marta decides to call the next 30 day writing workshop, Needless to say, I could talk about this stuff forever. It's like the gift that keeps on giving.
What prompted Eliza's compliment was the fact that I joined yesterday's Zoom call from radio station WIOX FM 91.3 in Roxbury NY, where I do my weekly radio show, called the Doo-Wop Shop. My show is on Sundays from 2pm-4pm Eastern time, although lately I have been doing 3 hour shows, from 2pm-5pm because the guy who comes on right after me with his Folk Odyssey show had a heart attack several weeks ago and he is still in recovery and not quite up yet to returning to his time slot. So the program director at the station asked me to do an extra hour, and the guy who usually follows Jack (the Folk Odyssey guy) with a show called JimBob's Jukebox was asked to fill in with an extra hour as well.
As I say on my radio show, "Til Jack gets back, we're pickin' up the slack." How long we'll have to pick up the slack is anybody's guess, but I have no problem with doing a 3 hour show although some of my listeners tell me that a full 3 hours of "the greatest doo-wop oldies of all time" is a bit much for them and they tell me that 2 hours of "the greatest doo-wop hit from the 50s and 60s" is about as much as they can take.
Eliza said she listened to only about 5 or 6 of the songs on my playlist before signing off, since doo-wop is little bit out of her ken, although she said she actually liked one or two of them, at least somewhat. She just turned 60 the other day and I guess that makes her more of a Beatles fan or a Rolling Stones fan, or maybe she just likes classical music, who knows? I know she sings in a church-like choir so maybe that has something to do with it. I'm sure she's not into Heavy Metal, although one never really knows, do one? as Fats Waller used to say.
BTW, the reason I was in the radio studio yesterday attending the call and not here at home where I usually am, is because we are moving to Roxbury in a few days and my wife was cleaning the new place and waiting for the cable to come and set up our internet service and I was there to put away all the kitchen stuff that was packed in boxes on the kitchen counter. I took a break from putting away the dishes and the silverware and all the gluten-free crackers my wife ordered from someplace, and went to the studio to get on my call.
WTF, time's up again? I'm just getting started!
OK, folks, this is your host Gary Falk, the Duke of Doo-Wop saying goodbye for now, and I hope you'll join me tomorrow where I'm probably gonna toot my own horn more that a little bit by telling you what Eliza said about me and my show.
So don't forget to tune in and catch all the exciting March Mazurka action.
Correction: Make that 10 years, not 20, that I have been a member (not always in good standing) in the POK community.
ReplyDeleteI like the sense of mild tension in the narrator -- what will it be like to spend time IN PERSON INFORMALLY with this Eliza person?.....
